Dame Carolyn McCall OBE

Dame Carolyn McCall’s story is a beautiful testament to grit, reinvention, and leadership grounded in vision. Born in Bangalore in 1961 to parents working abroad, she spent her early years moving between India, Singapore and later the United Kingdom — a childhood that gave her global perspective, adaptability and a sense that opportunity comes in many forms. From there, she studied history and politics at university, but it was in the world of media and business where she discovered her calling.

Her rise was far from overnight or predetermined. She started her career in the advertising and planning division of a major newspaper group, and over time gained reputation for intelligence, hard work and strategic thinking.  In 2006 she became Chief Executive of a leading media group — a milestone that proved she could lead complex, high-pressure businesses while staying true to journalistic and ethical values.

Her next chapter came in 2010, when she accepted the challenge to lead a major European airline. As CEO of easyJet, she didn’t just maintain the business — she revitalised it. Under her guidance, the airline’s share price nearly quadrupled, and it transformed into one of Europe’s most profitable, well-managed low-cost carriers.  She re-imagined what a budget airline could be: affordable yet customer-focused, efficient yet humane. That success wasn’t just about numbers — it was about changing perceptions and delivering value to millions of travellers.

In recognition of her leadership and impact, she was honoured with national and industry awards, including an OBE for services to women in business and, later, a Damehood for her contributions to the aviation industry.  But for Dame Carolyn McCall, leadership is never about titles — it’s about caring deeply for people, embracing change boldly, and building institutions that serve communities, customers, and culture.
