Cyclades Olive Museum, Chora, Greece

The museum with it’s equipment is an excellent sample of Agricultural tradition and Preindustrial technology. The more we realize how much our life and our civilization is connected to the olive tree and its products and the more the techniques and methods of olive oil production are being developed, the more necessary it becomes in a rapidly changing world the preservation and exhibition of traditional, animal powered olive-mills.

Besides, most of them have ceased working since the late 60’s. One of the best preserved old olive-mills in Cyclades, is the one of Dimitris Chelmis who is civil engineer at Ano Pitrofos. The building dates back much earlier than 1600. It is on the famous hiking path number 9. It can be reached also by car. It was restored by the owner and transformed into an olive and olive oil museum, in order to offer to every visitor, regardless of age, the option to come close to the underling culture of the valuable olive oil product and to get acquainted with the old traditional techniques of its production as well.
