Curbar Edge

Curbar Edge offers dramatic gritstone cliffs, panoramic views, and exhilarating climbing experiences. Curbar Edge rises above Curbar village in the Dark Peak of the Peak District National Park at around 292 m above sea level. This rugged escarpment, sculpted from Chatsworth Grit and Crawshaw Sandstone, offers breathtaking views across the Derwent Valley, Chatsworth, and neighboring edges like Froggatt and Baslow, bringing wanderers face‑to‑face with both natural beauty and geological significance.

This edge has deep historical roots. Bronze‑Age burial cairns and millstone quarrying from Roman to medieval times dot the landscape, while in the early 1900s it became a crucible for UK rock‑climbing history, with climbers establishing routes of increasing technical difficulty—including the legendary E10 route “Doctor Dolittle” . Today it remains a top destination for walkers, families, photographers, climbers, and bird watchers, especially at sunrise or during heather bloom in late summer .
