Cliveden House

An elegant hotel in a stunning 17th-century mansion, complete with a lavish spa, outdoor pool, and fine dining. Cliveden House, perched majestically in Taplow, Berkshire, is a historic estate celebrated for its architectural grandeur, rich heritage, and connections to British high society. Over 350 years, it has transformed from a private residence into a luxurious country house hotel, while maintaining its historical significance and charm. The estate is famed for its elegant gardens, stately architecture, and intriguing stories that span centuries of political and social history.

The origins of Cliveden date back to 1666, when the 2nd Duke of Buckingham built the first house for his mistress, the Countess of Shrewsbury. In the 19th century, architect Charles Barry, renowned for designing the Houses of Parliament, undertook significant rebuilding efforts. In 1893, American millionaire William Waldorf Astor purchased Cliveden and turned it into a center for high society gatherings, welcoming prominent figures including Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, and Mahatma Gandhi. The estate became part of the National Trust in 1942, ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment. Cliveden also gained notoriety in the 1960s through the Profumo Affair, a political scandal that left a lasting mark on British history.

The gardens of Cliveden are a living testament to its storied past. The Long Garden, originally designed by Norah Lindsay in the 1930s, has been carefully restored to reflect her vision, featuring climate-resilient plantings and enhanced accessibility. Visitors can also enjoy the Italianate Water Garden and the restored Round Garden, both offering a glimpse into the estate’s historic landscaping and aesthetic grandeur. Today, Cliveden House operates as a luxury hotel, blending historical elegance with modern comforts.

The estate features 48 individually named rooms, a renowned spa, and Britain’s only Grade I-listed outdoor swimming pool. Guests can also stay in Spring Cottage, a secluded retreat on the Thames with ties to Cliveden’s colorful past. Managed by the National Trust, the estate welcomes visitors to explore its history through guided tours, stroll its meticulously maintained gardens, and partake in events and exhibitions that celebrate its illustrious heritage. Cliveden House remains a symbol of British culture and history, offering visitors an immersive experience in luxury, politics, and social intrigue, all set within one of the country’s most enchanting estates.
