Classis Ravenna – Museo della Città e del Territorio

An engaging museum offering insights into Ravenna’s history, from its Roman origins to its Byzantine golden age. Classis Ravenna – Museo della Città e del Territorio is a prominent archaeological museum located in Classe, a district of Ravenna, Italy. Housed in a repurposed early 20th-century sugar factory, the museum offers an immersive journey through Ravenna’s rich history, from its pre-Roman origins to the Middle Ages.

Visitors can explore artifacts such as urns, oil lamps, statues, memorial stones, and polychrome mosaics, complemented by 3D reconstructions and multimedia displays. Notably, the museum features a 33-meter-long mosaic wave staircase created by the Laboratorio di Restauro del Mosaico Antico of Fondazione RavennAntica, symbolizing the city’s enduring connection to the sea.

In September 2023, the museum expanded its exhibitions with two new sections: “Living in Ravenna” and “Praying in Ravenna.” These additions delve into the residential and religious aspects of the city’s past, providing deeper insights into its urban development and cultural dynamics. The museum is fully accessible, offering facilities for visitors with disabilities, and is located approximately 6 km south of Ravenna’s city center, near the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe. It is easily reachable by car, public transport, or bicycle, with ample parking and an equipped camper resting area available.
