City of Lodz History Museum, Lodz, Łódź Voivodeship, Poland

Museum of the City of Lodz was established October 30, 1975 Ordinance No. 43/75 year Mayor of Lodz. The originator of the opening of the museum in the historic Zabytów was the then Conservator of the City Antoni Szram (he was the first director of the newly established institutions). Initially, the institution was to be located in the town hall, which houses the State Archives and the building at pl. Freedom 2, but eventually the Museum of the City of Lodz adopted at its headquarters interiors of the former residence of industrialist Izrael K. Poznanski Street Ogrodowa 15.

In Lodz, multiple efforts have been made around the creation of a museum of historical kolekcjonującego “ice”. Counterargument was already in existence specialized type of historical museums (Museum of Art, Archeology and Ethnography Museum, the Textile Museum, the Museum of the History of Revolutionary Movement – now the Museum of Independence Traditions), which includes among its specialties dealt with fragmentary history and art of Lodz. The emerging new museum assumed the demarcation of the scope of activities includes research not only on history, but also the culture of this city (ancient and contemporary). This was to fill the gap present in the museums of Lodz. Collecting memorabilia and “from Łódź” thus particularly affected areas such as exhibits in the field of film, theater, literature, newspapers, music, architecture and urban design and material culture. An important goal was also to create a facility relating to the present and open to the public. These assumptions are still valid.

The first exhibition inaugurating the activity of the Museum, was an exhibition entitled Piotrkowska Street – dedicated to interior architecture and the urban main thoroughfares of the city . Presented exhibitions often accompanied by artistic events (concerts, recitals, performances and happenings), which is a provocation and a commentary on contemporary reality. They also inspired the artistic community to act together.
