Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo) in Belém, Pará, is a historic Catholic church renowned for its architectural beauty and rich heritage. Established in 1626 by the Carmelite Order, it stands as one of the oldest churches in the Amazon region Belém. The church’s construction was completed in 1721, with significant renovations in the 18th century led by Italian architect Antônio Landi. These renovations introduced Baroque and Neoclassical elements, including the iconic stone facade and two-nave structure. The interior features scagliola-painted walls and ceilings adorned with gold stars, reflecting the artistic styles of the era.

In recent years, the church underwent a comprehensive restoration completed in 2015, funded by the Archdiocese of Belém and Vale, with support from IPHAN. The project addressed structural issues, restored the facade and interior paintings, and implemented modern safety systems, ensuring the preservation of this architectural gem. Today, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel continues to serve as a place of worship and cultural significance. It is currently managed by the Seeds of the Word Community, which also operates a mission house and retreat center on the premises.
