Restaurants offering a standard of cooking this high for over 20 years are few and far between and the numerous regulars of this smart, friendly neighbourhood spot are a testament to its perennial popularity. Bruce Poole’s long-standing Head Chef, Matt Christmas, sticks to a tried-and-tested formula: the menu is reasonably priced, and the carefully prepared seasonal dishes rely on the quality of their produce, allowing the main ingredient to shine. The base is largely classical French but with British and Mediterranean influences – this is a kitchen where things are done the traditional way.
The wine list is well chosen and features some well-priced rare wines, with an interesting selection by the glass. Regulars appreciate the corkage option, which allows them to bring a wine from their own cellar to accompany their favourite dishes.
