Chester Roman Amphitheatre

Free entry to ruins of Britain’s largest Roman amphitheatre, with military re-enactments in summer. The Roman amphitheatre at Chester was the largest in Britain. Used for entertainment and military training, there have been two stone-built amphitheatres on the site. The first included access to the upper tiers of seats via stairs on the rear wall, as at Pompeii, and had a small shrine next to its north entrance. The second provided seat access via vaulted stairways. The two buildings differed from each other and from all other British amphitheatres, underlining the importance of Roman Chester. Chester Amphitheatre is a Roman amphitheatre in Chester, Cheshire. The site is managed by English Heritage; it is designated as a Grade I listed building, and a scheduled monument.

Chester Roman Amphitheatre is a remarkable archaeological testament to Roman Britain, built in the late 1st century AD and recognized as the largest known Roman amphitheatre in the country. Managed today by English Heritage, it’s the only Roman amphitheatre of its scale to have undergone extensive excavation, revealing its imposing structure and historical depth. The partially exposed northern half, altar to the goddess Nemesis, and layered archaeological findings all reflect its dual roles in ancient military training and public spectacle.
