Center of Oradour sur Glane Memory, Oradour-sur-Glane, Limousin, France

The village of Oradour-sur-Glane, located 22 kilometers north-west of Limoges, is known around the world for having preserved the traces of the massacre of 642 men, women and children perpetrated by a unit of the 2nd SS Division Das Reich June 10, 1944.

Classified as a historical monument in 1946, the ruins of the martyr village are visited each year by 300,000 people. The ruins alone could not continue to perpetuate a message of memory and peace; the time had come to dissolve this specific memory and to explain to the visitor, through a work as a historian, what was the tragedy of June 10, 1944, and what implacable logic had presided over it.
