Centotaph

The Sydney Cenotaph is a heritage-listed monument located in Martin Place, in the Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by Bertram Mackennal and built from 1927 to 1929 by Dorman Long & Co. It is also known as Martin Place Memorial and The Cenotaph. It is one of the oldest World War I monuments in central Sydney. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 11 November 2009.

The Cenotaph in Sydney is one of the city’s most important war memorials, located in Martin Place. It was unveiled in 1927 to honor Australian soldiers who served and lost their lives in World War I, but its dedication has since extended to commemorate all Australian service members in subsequent conflicts.

The memorial is a simple yet powerful structure, consisting of a granite slab with two bronze statues—one of an Australian soldier and the other of a sailor. The Cenotaph is a focal point for Anzac Day services, held annually on April 25, and other military commemorative events. It remains a central site of remembrance in Sydney, symbolizing Australia’s participation in wartime efforts and the sacrifice of its people
