Castle Clinton National Monument

Circular fort from 1808-1811 & later an immigration center, now a small museum. Located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, Castle Clinton stands where New York City began and represents not only the city’s growth but the growth of the nation. Initially intended to prevent a British invasion in 1812, the fortification has transformed over the years to welcome theatregoers, immigrants, sightseers, and now, millions of visitors to New York Harbor.

Castle Clinton, located at the southern tip of Manhattan, is a historic fort built in the early 19th century to defend New York Harbor. Originally constructed between 1808 and 1811, it was designed as part of a coastal defense system to protect the city from potential naval attacks. Named after Mayor DeWitt Clinton, the fort never saw combat but played a significant role in the city’s early military history.

Over time, Castle Clinton transformed from a military stronghold to a multifaceted cultural and civic site. In the mid-19th century, it served as an immigration processing center, welcoming millions of newcomers to America before Ellis Island took over that role. Later, it housed an aquarium, showcasing marine life to New Yorkers until the 1940s, when it faced near demolition but was preserved due to its historical significance.

Today, Castle Clinton stands as a National Monument within Battery Park, managed by the National Park Service. Visitors can explore its stone walls and learn about its diverse past through exhibits and ranger-led tours. It also serves as the ticket office for ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, connecting it to New York’s enduring legacy as a gateway to freedom.
