Casa Brasil

Casa França-Brasil, now known as Casa Brasil, is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most elegant neoclassical landmarks. Located in the heart of the city’s historic centre, it was designed by French architect Auguste Grandjean de Montigny, a member of the French Artistic Mission. Commissioned by King João VI of Portugal in 1819, it originally served as a Praça de Comércio, or commercial exchange, and opened to the public in 1820. Its graceful columns, arches, and symmetrical design reflect the influence of European architecture that was introduced to Brazil during this period of royal presence in Rio.

Over time, the building took on a variety of roles, functioning as a customs house, courthouse, and archive. By the late 20th century, however, it was in need of restoration. Under the leadership of Darcy Ribeiro, then Secretary of Culture of Rio de Janeiro, a major project began in the 1980s with support from French cultural institutions. The result was a careful renovation that preserved its architectural integrity while adapting the space for cultural use. Casa França-Brasil was officially inaugurated as a cultural centre in 1990, marking a new chapter in its history.

Today, Casa Brasil stands as a vibrant hub of the arts. It hosts a rich program of visual art exhibitions, performances, cinema screenings, and cultural events that reflect both Brazilian creativity and international collaborations. Visitors can also enjoy a reading room, a café, a lounge, and an outdoor patio that provides a welcoming space to relax in the city centre. Entrance is free, ensuring accessibility for all.

The building is located at Rua Visconde de Itaboraí, 78, in downtown Rio de Janeiro. It is typically open from Tuesday through Sunday between 10:00 and 20:00, while remaining closed on Mondays. For locals and tourists alike, Casa França-Brasil is more than a monument; it is a living cultural space where the past and present of Rio de Janeiro meet in harmony.
