Carlisle Citadel

Carlisle Citadel, located at the southern gateway of Carlisle on English Street, is a striking historic site consisting of two grand sandstone towers. Built in the early 16th century under the orders of King Henry VIII, the Citadel was designed as a defensive structure to protect the city. Its thick walls and artillery embrasures were a testament to the strategic importance of Carlisle during this period.

Originally constructed between 1541 and 1542, the Citadel replaced the medieval Botcher’s Gate and served as a fortress for the city. In the early 19th century, the renowned engineer Thomas Telford and architect Sir Robert Smirke transformed the towers into court buildings. The Eastern Tower became the Nisi Prius Court, while the Western Tower was designated the Crown Court. These modifications marked a transition from military to civic use, with the Citadel serving as the city’s primary court and prison well into the 20th century.

By 1992, the courts had relocated to a modern facility, and in 2016, Cumbria County Council moved out, leaving the Citadel without an official function. Recently, the site was acquired by the University of Cumbria, which is developing it into a central part of its Carlisle campus, blending the historic towers into a modern academic environment.

The Western Tower occasionally opens to the public, offering guided tours that showcase its historic courtrooms, cells, and the Grand Jury Room, featuring original architectural details and period decor. Visitors can explore the rich history of this landmark while enjoying its unique blend of military, judicial, and civic heritage. For those visiting Carlisle, the Citadel provides a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past and its evolving role in the community.
