Calgary Municipal Building

The Calgary Municipal Building, often referred to as New City Hall, is a prominent example of postmodern architecture in downtown Calgary. Completed in 1985, this 14-story structure features a distinctive triangular footprint and a reflective glass façade designed to complement the adjacent historic Old City Hall . Serving as the central hub for civic administration, it houses over 2,000 city employees and includes the City Council Chambers, making it a focal point for municipal governance.

Beyond its administrative functions, the building is notable for its architectural features, including a 12-story central atrium capped with a rooftop skylight, and limestone-clad lower walls that echo the materials of the neighboring historic structures . The design was the result of a public competition, aiming to create a modern civic image while respecting the city’s architectural heritage. The building also includes accessible features such as ramps, elevators with voice announcements, and accessible washrooms, ensuring it serves all members of the community.
