Calanques, Cassis, Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, France

The limestone cliffs and turquoise waters of the Calanques stretch over 11 mi from Marseilles to Cassis. The site is extremely picturesque, and the ‘calanques’ massif is a paradise for hikers, climbers and sailing enthusiasts alike.

Its beaches and small typical ports, including that of Morgiou with its fishing huts and colourful boats, are a delight for photographers. To quote a line from a Maurice Guillaume poem, who devoted much work to this subject: ‘Une calanque, c’est un peu de mer qui chante ou qui rêve et sommeille au creux d’un ancien val…’. (‘A calanque is a bit of sea that sings or dreams as it slumbers in the hollow of a former valley…’).
