You can see it in the smooth, worn streets, the billboard images ghosted on brick hotels, the head frames that mark entry into what was once the “Richest Hill on Earth.” It’s no surprise, then, that the town’s vintage architecture and colourful past are often what draw people to visit.

Yet once they turn off I-90 and into town, visitors quickly discover that in Butte it isn’t only brick and mortar that have been preserved. The spirit, individuality and pride of the people here are as palpable as the day someone first cried “Gold!” down on Silver Bow Creek. It’s that character that enchants, that wide-armed hospitality that invites.

Butte is a city in, and the county seat of Silver Bow County, Montana, United States. In 1977, the city and county governments consolidated to form the sole entity of Butte-Silver Bow. Butte is Montana’s fifth largest city.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Butte experienced every stage of development of a mining town, from camp to boomtown to mature city to center for historic preservation and environmental cleanup. Unlike most such towns, Butte’s urban landscape includes mining operations set within residential areas, making the environmental consequences of the extraction economy all the more apparent.
