Buckinghamshire Railway Centre

Railway heritage: preserved steam locomotives, historic rolling stock, track-side exhibits. The Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, located in Quainton near Aylesbury, is a fascinating destination for railway enthusiasts and families alike. Set on a 25-acre site, the centre combines historical exhibits, working steam locomotives, and interactive displays to offer a comprehensive glimpse into Britain’s railway heritage. Operated by the Quainton Railway Society, the centre has been preserving and showcasing railway history since 1969, making it a key attraction in Buckinghamshire for both education and entertainment.

Visitors can explore an extensive collection of steam locomotives, carriages, and railway memorabilia. Notable pieces include the Metropolitan Railway E Class No.1, GWR 4073 Class No.5080 Defiant, and the South African Class 25NC 4-8-4 No.3405. The museum also offers hands-on experiences, including short train rides that are particularly popular with families and enthusiasts alike. These rides allow visitors to enjoy the sights and sounds of working steam locomotives, providing an immersive and memorable experience.

The centre hosts “Steaming Days” and special events throughout the year, typically on Sundays, Bank Holiday Mondays, and some school holiday Wednesdays from April to October. During these events, visitors can enjoy steam train rides and participate in various interactive activities. Tickets for these events can be purchased online, with pricing ranging from £8.50 for children to £12.50 for adults, making it an accessible and engaging outing for all ages.

The Buckinghamshire Railway Centre also features a glass-roofed Visitor Centre, which houses a café, gift shop, and model railway displays. The Railway Café and Gift Shop are open Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM, providing refreshments and souvenirs; during these hours, steam train rides and museum access are not available, but entry to the café and shop is free.
