British Council

The British Council (BC) has been active in Harare since 1980. In addition to programmes devoted to the English language, its main aim is to promote artistic exchange between Great Britain and Zimbabwe, to pursue the development of the cultural sector in the country, and to present art from Zimbabwe abroad.

For instance, the BC, in co-operation with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, sponsored the country’s participation in the 54th Biennale in Venice. Working with the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), it developed HIFA-Direct, the mentoring programme that offers young theatrical artists, authors and producers an opportunity to show their works abroad. Other co-operation partners for the BC include the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust, Alliance Française, the Intwasa Arts Festival, the Shoko Festival for poetry, hip-hop and urban culture, and the Theatre in the Park in Harare.
