Bosco Verticale

The Bosco Verticale, located in Milan’s Porta Nuova district, consists of two striking residential towers rising to 110 and 76 meters. Completed in 2014 and designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, these buildings stand out as a pioneering model of sustainable urban architecture. Their defining feature is the extensive integration of nature into the structure, with facades covered in lush greenery that transforms concrete into a living, breathing ecosystem right in the heart of the city.

Each tower hosts around 800 mature trees, over 4,500 shrubs, and approximately 20,000 plants from more than 90 different species, carefully selected and positioned according to sunlight exposure on the balconies. This vertical forest creates the equivalent of about two hectares of woodland concentrated on a compact urban footprint, effectively bringing a dense natural habitat into a high-density environment without requiring horizontal land expansion.

The plants not only provide visual beauty but also support urban biodiversity by offering homes for birds and insects. Beyond its aesthetic impact, the Bosco Verticale delivers significant environmental benefits. The dense foliage acts as a natural filter, absorbing fine dust particles and carbon dioxide while producing oxygen and regulating humidity. It helps mitigate urban heat, reduces energy needs for cooling by shading interiors in summer, and improves overall air quality in the surrounding area. This innovative approach demonstrates how architecture can actively contribute to combating pollution and climate challenges in modern cities.
