Black Lake, Gramado, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Initially called Vale do Bom Retiro, Leopoldo Rosenfeldt built the lake following a fire that destroyed most of the region’s native vegetation, adorning its banks with trees imported from Germany’s Black Forest, giving the lake its name.

Its deep waters are a dark shade of green, reflecting the pine trees that alternate with colorful azaleas in the winter and blue hydrangeas in the summer. Visitors can enjoy a fragrance-filled walk along its banks, but the biggest attraction by far is the pedal boats that lend the lake a bright and happy atmosphere.
