Berkeley Castle

The Berkeley family welcome you to Berkeley Castle, their ancient fortress home where they have lived since their ancestor, Robert Fitzharding, completed the Keep in the late 12th Century.

The history played out within Berkeley Castle’s walls make it one of the most remarkable buildings in Britain and the family hope that you will visit them to experience its special atmosphere.

This intriguing castle has been the home of the Berkeley family for more than 850 years and was recently featured on the BBC’s ‘Britain’s Hidden Heritage’ programme. It was the last place of residence of King Edward II, who was imprisoned in the castle and murdered within its walls. The Castle is open from Easter until the end of October. The Butterfly House reopens on 1 May, walk amongst the stunning butterflies. A visit to the Yurt Tearoom is also a must! Please check our website for open days and hours.
