Bear Farm

The Veresegyház Bear Sanctuary, located just a short drive from Budapest, is a unique wildlife refuge that serves as the only bear sanctuary in Central Europe. Established in 1998 in collaboration with the World Organization for the Protection of Animals, the facility spans nearly 11 hectares of natural landscape designed to prioritize animal welfare. It provides a permanent home for brown bears rescued from circuses, private owners, and inadequate zoo conditions, allowing them to live out their lives in an environment that closely mimics their natural habitat.

The sanctuary is thoughtfully structured with sprawling enclosures that include pine forests for climbing, 15 specialized caves for resting, and two large artificial lakes where the bears can drink and bathe. One of the most popular experiences for visitors is the opportunity to interact with the animals safely by feeding them honey and fruit using long-handled wooden spoons. This interactive element, combined with the sight of these massive creatures roaming freely among the trees, creates a memorable experience that balances education with a rare, close-up look at one of Europe’s most powerful predators.

Beyond its namesake inhabitants, the farm has expanded over the years to house a diverse range of other species, including several packs of grey wolves, lynxes, and even a pride of lions. The facility also features a dedicated area for domestic animals like Hungarian grey cattle and racka sheep, alongside smaller residents such as raccoons and coatis. With its peaceful rural setting, playgrounds, and a small scenic railway for children, the sanctuary has evolved into a leading eco-tourist destination that emphasizes the importance of conservation and the ethical treatment of animals in a family-friendly atmosphere.
