As the Bavarian State Opera, we not only look back proudly on 350 years of history – we also aim to contribute daily with artistic impulses, outstanding productions, and socially relevant discourses to enrich our cultural scene far beyond the Free State of Bavaria.
With approximately 600,000 guests annually and over 400 events, we significantly contribute to Munich’s reputation as one of the most renowned international cultural cities. Within a season running from September to July, we present over 40 operas spanning five centuries and more than 20 ballets from the 19th century to the present day, in addition to concerts and recitals. With 2,101 seats, our venue, the Munich National Theatre, is the largest opera house in Germany and is regarded as one of the most beautiful theaters in Europe.
As a three-division house, the Bavarian State Opera boasts its own orchestra – the Bavarian State Orchestra – and a ballet company – the Bavarian State Ballet. Since 2021, Vladimir Jurowski has assumed the position of General Music Director, leading the Bavarian State Orchestra. The Bavarian State Ballet has been under the direction of Ballet Director Laurent Hilaire since 2022.
