Basilica of Saint John Baptist

The Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista in Ravenna, Italy, is a historic church founded in the 5th century by Empress Galla Placidia. According to tradition, she commissioned the basilica as a vow after surviving a perilous sea storm during her journey from Constantinople to Ravenna. The church has undergone various restorations over the centuries, particularly after significant damage during World War II. Despite these changes, it retains its original longitudinal layout, featuring a three-nave plan and a polygonal apse. Notably, the 14th-century Gothic-style marble portal and the 10th-century bell tower are prominent architectural elements that have survived through time.

Inside, visitors can admire fragments of 13th-century mosaic floors depicting allegorical scenes, fantastical animals, and historical events such as the Fourth Crusade. These artworks offer a glimpse into the medieval artistic heritage of Ravenna. The basilica also houses a wooden trussed ceiling, reconstructed in the 14th century, and several frescoes from the same period, providing insight into the religious and cultural history of the region.

For those wishing to visit, the Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista is located near Ravenna’s railway station at Viale Luigi Carlo Farini, Ravenna. It is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 am and 4:30 pm, with the last admission 15 minutes before closing. Admission is free. Please note that the basilica is closed on Mondays. For more information, you can contact the local tourism office at [email protected].
