Basilica of Saint Francis

Famous for its submerged crypt with a water-filled floor reflecting ancient mosaics and often home to goldfish. The Basilica of San Francesco, located in Ravenna, Italy, is a historical church with origins dating back to the 5th century. Initially dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, it underwent significant reconstruction in the 9th and 10th centuries, resulting in the structure that stands today. In 1261, the Franciscans assumed responsibility for the church, rededicating it to Saint Francis of Assisi.

Notably, in 1321, the basilica hosted the funeral of the esteemed poet Dante Alighieri, whose tomb is situated adjacent to the church. A distinctive feature of the basilica is its flooded crypt, where visitors can observe ancient mosaics submerged under water, often accompanied by swimming fish. This unique aspect offers a glimpse into the city’s historical challenges with subsidence and water levels. The basilica’s interior, characterized by its austere design, provides a serene environment for reflection and appreciation of its rich history.
