Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast
The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace known locally as Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix was built in the small city of Yamoussoukro the home town of Felix Houphouet-Boigny, a former president of the Ivory Coast. It looks just like St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, but it’s actually even bigger. Many of Africa’s leaders in the 1970’s and 1980’s were prone to using their countries’ meager resources to build some outrageous buildings that were not exactly suited to the climate, but which very much suited their egos.
