Basecamp Andermatt, Andermatt, Switzerland

The on 1444m preferred Andermatt, with its approximately 1,000 inhabitants of the latest archetypal Alpine villages of Switzerland. Already since the 13th century Andermatt was known for its central location as a traffic hub in all four heavenly directions. Both the Gotthard Pass as an access to the south, as well as the east-west connection between the Rhone Valley and Graubünden via Furka and Oberalppass, made Andermatt a rich community.

Andermatt in the course of time with the opening of the Gotthardt tunnel, Andermatt was cut off from the main traffic flow. After the Passstrasse had lost its importance as a central traffic route, Andermatt fell into a Sleeping Beauty sleep. Hotels and infrastructure have many places still the charm of the 50-60er years and one has the feeling the time would have stood still here. Since the municipality had devoted itself to the military and the resultant stable income, instead of investing in the volatile tourism business, the townscape was hardly altered for decades.

Freerider discover Andermatt In recent years, movement has returned to Andermatt. After a few articles in Scandinavian ski magazines and because of the many positive contributions on the Internet, an international community of freeriders has established itself in Andermatt. Wide skies, the Internet and cheap flights in Europe have made the rugged mountains accessible to a new group of mountain climbers.

The special feature of Andermatt is the mixture of colorful freeriders with modern equipment and the old houses in the traditional style. Locals and trainers have different passions, all of which are experienced in Andermatt. The lifts in Andermatt can not compete with other ski resorts. So it is not the lift capacity and the slopes, but the little commercial and original Andermatt, which attracts people.

Andermatt in the winter In winter, when Andermatt is flanked by steep, shady northern slopes, it becomes a meeting place for freeriders from all over the world. Due to the geographic location at the main peak of the Alps, the low-level runner from the south and north meet Andermatt, which means that it is often snowing for all powder freaks. No matter what direction the clouds come from, in Andermatt it almost always snow. The slopes on the Gemstock are aligned to the north and get sun in the spring. The snow in the steep, shady northern slopes remains dry and powdery for a long time.
