Bab El Bhar, Tunis, Tunisia
Admire ancient stonemasonry at Bab El Bhar, an impressive stone city gate at the Victory Square. Originally built during the Aghlabid period in the 9th century, the present-day yellow stone structure was constructed in 1860 on orders of the French consul. Also known as Porte de France, the gate separates the Old City from the new European-style city.
A crenellated parapet with a calligraphy tablet tops the 8 m tall arch which once connected the Old City to the docks. Check out an iron mark, showing the point of the gate lying 7 m below the sea level. Well-lit at night, the gate serves as a landmark of the city.
