Founded in the 1930s, this scenic, private club hosts the annual Masters Tournament each April. Augusta Country Club holds the distinction of being the inaugural golf club established in Augusta, tracing its origins back to the documented annals of 1899. Yet, its genesis actually predates this period, firmly situating it among the esteemed ranks of America’s earliest golfing enclaves.

Initially known as the Bon Air Golf Club, its nomenclature drew from the intimate ties its founding luminaries shared with the illustrious Bon Air Hotel. Historical records reveal its inception around the years 1897-1898, although its official recording took place in 1899, as attested by the archives of the Richmond County Courthouse during the months of March and April.

A metamorphosis ensued in 1900, christening the club as the Country Club of Augusta, only to undergo another transformation in 1921, when it adopted its current moniker, the Augusta Country Club. Subsequently, in 1942, the club formally amended its legal designation to the Augusta Country Club, Incorporated.

The distinguished quartet responsible for introducing the noble pursuit of golf to denizens of Augusta and Summerville included Dr. William Henry Harrison Jr., Mr. Morley Harrison, Mr. Henry H. Cumming, and Mr. Louis P. Berckmans. As the narrative of golf’s introduction to Augusta unfolds alongside the annals of Augusta Country Club, one cannot help but acknowledge the profound gratitude owed to these visionary gentlemen.
