Asmara Synagogue, Asmara, Eritrea

The oldest place of worship in the city, Synagogue of Asmara remains as a testament to the once-rich Jewish community. The 1905 synagogue attracts with its ornate iron doors depicting the star of David and a menorah, and a haunting cemetery in the garden. Inside, admire luxuriant chandeliers and the dark wooden ceiling in the main hall. Empty classrooms that educated generations of Jews in Asmara now evoke feelings of nostalgia. Bear in mind that the synagogue is often closed.
