Through the Collection, our associated programs, and stimulating exhibitions, Gallery visitors are offered unique and exciting experiences of historic and contemporary Australian artists, as well as the art of the world. We place particular emphasis on the arts of Australia, and due to our geographic position, the Indian Ocean Rim. Our proximity and access to many of the most exciting cultures of the world adds immeasurably to programs, exhibitions, collections and events at the State Art Gallery. The Art Gallery of Western Australia, founded in 1895, occupies a precinct of three heritage buildings on the south-eastern corner of the Perth Cultural Centre. The Gallery houses the State Art Collection, which includes one of the world’s finest collections of Indigenous art, the pre-eminent collection of Western Australian art and design, as well as Australian and International art and design.

The Art Gallery of Western Australia is a public gallery that is part of the Perth Cultural Centre, in Perth, Western Australia. It is located near the Western Australian Museum and State Library of Western Australia. The current gallery opened in 1979. The State’s art collection consists of over 15,500 works of art,[2] and the Art Gallery is visited by approximately 400,000 people annually.

Founded in 1895, this excellent gallery houses the state’s pre-eminent art collection. It contains important post-WWII works by Australian luminaries such as Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker, Grace Cossington Smith, Russell Drysdale, Arthur Streeton and Sidney Nolan. Check the website for a changing array of free tours run most days at 11am and 1pm. The gallery’s Indigenous galleries are also very well regarded. Indigenous work ranges from canvases to bark paintings and sculpture, and artists include Rover Thomas, Angilya Mitchell, Christopher Pease and Phyllis Thomas. The annual WA Indigenous Art Awards entries are displayed here from August to December.
