Apes Den

Iconic spot in Upper Rock Nature Reserve where patrons can get an up-close look at Barbary macaques. Visit the Apes’ Den, home to some of Gibraltar’s famous Barbary macaques, the only free-to-roam primates in Europe. According to legend, if the Apes leave Gibraltar it will cease to be British.

Apes den Watch out for monkey business though as they can be mischievous – and remember, they are wild animals. Don’t do anything to annoy them and do not feed them as they are fed fresh food every day. They will often approach and sometimes climb onto people, as they are used to human interaction. Nevertheless, they are still wild animals and will bite if frightened or annoyed. All Gibraltar Barbary macaques are descended from North African populations of Barbary macaques. DNA evidence has established beyond doubt the present population is of relatively recent Algerian and Moroccan origin.
