Antiguo Palacio de Verano, Haidian, China

The old Summer Palace, a group of European-style buildings, was built by Emperor Qianlong between 1740 and 1747, following plans drawn up by Jesuit missionaries. The splendid set, which mixed the best of Western and Chinese architecture, was known as the “Versailles of the East”, until it was destroyed by the Anglo-French troops during the looting of the Summer Palace of 1860. Today only a few ruins remain Majestic, but it is very nice to walk through this park dotted with vestiges of another era.
