Ancient city of Teos, Seferihisar, Izmir, Turkey

Landmark, archaeological area featuring an ancient city with acropolis, theater & temple ruins.

The ancient geographer Strabon (BC 64 – AD 24) was the first to identify Teos as Athamas, the so-called Athamantis by the famous lyric poet Anakreon, then Naoklos, the illegitimate son of Kodros in the period of Ion colonization, and Damasos and Boiotiales Geres .

The archaeological excavations continued between 1962 and 1967 in the ancient city revealed that they had been settled in the city since the Protogeometric Period (around 1000 BC). Though the Miletian philosopher Thales was at the center of the Ionia Region in about 600 BC, he proposed Teos as the center of twelve Ionian cities, but this proposal was not accepted. The commercial relations of the city of Teos in the 6th century BC can be followed up to Ancient Egypt. As in all Anatolia, Teos was passed by the Persian commander Harpagos after 545 BC.
