The Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic to the European Union plays a central role in communication between Slovakia and the European institutions. Its role is to defend and promote Slovak positions as effectively as possible and to prepare regular meetings of ministers and meetings of heads of state or government – EU summits.
A team of diplomatic representatives of all ministries represents Slovakia’s interests in the European Union and thus forms an extended hand of ministries in enforcing opinions, proposals and recommendations in negotiations within the EU Council. Among the EU institutions, it is the Council that is the decision-making body on the Union’s political issues. Together with the European Parliament, the Council adopts legislative proposals submitted by the Commission. The main activity of the Council is to find the best solutions through negotiations. This requires lengthy and exhaustive discussions in the preparatory phase, at meetings of experts from individual Member States and Permanent Representatives ( Ambassadors ) and at ministerial level. The staff of the Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic to the EU, as well as experts from headquarters, participate in working groups and committees,of which there are also more than three hundred with subgroups and prepare materials for the negotiations of the Permanent Representatives and subsequently of the EU Ministers. Meetings of the Council of Ministers in various formations are prepared by the Permanent Representatives Committee (Coreper II – Ambassadors and Coreper I – Representatives of Ambassadors ), which meets weekly and approves the work of committees and working groups.
