Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut

Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut’s distinguished career exemplifies a profound commitment to diplomacy and international cooperation. Born on July 9, 1960, in Düsseldorf, Germany, he pursued studies in history and German philology at the University of Cologne, earning his doctorate in 1987 with a dissertation on France’s reaction to the 1952 Stalin Notes.

Embarking on his diplomatic journey in 1987, Meyer-Landrut held various pivotal roles. From 1990 to 1993, he was stationed at the German Embassy in Vienna, participating in arms control negotiations. Between 1999 and 2002, he served as the spokesperson for Germany’s Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels. His expertise led him to the Federal Chancellery, where, from 2011 to 2015, he advised Chancellor Angela Merkel as Director General for European Affairs. In 2015, he was appointed German Ambassador to France and Monaco, a position he held until 2020. Subsequently, he became the Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, serving from September 2020 until his appointment as German Ambassador to the Netherlands in August 2024.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Meyer-Landrut’s personal life reflects his dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding. Married to a French national, he is the father of four children. His family background is steeped in diplomatic tradition; his uncle, Andreas Meyer-Landrut, served as head of the Bundespräsidialamt under President Richard von Weizsäcker, and he is a first cousin once removed of singer Lena Meyer-Landrut.
