Italian Embassy to United States

The Embassy of Italy in Washington DC is the largest Italian bilateral embassy worldwide. The Chief of Mission is Ambassador Mariangela Zappia. Based on the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations dated April 18, 1961 the functions of an Embassy are, among others:

  • To represent the sending State in the receiving State;
  • To protect in the receiving State the interests of the sending State and of its nationals, within the limits permitted by international law;
  • To negotiate with the Government of the receiving State;
  • To ascertain by all lawful means conditions and developments in the receiving State, and reporting thereon to the Government of the sending State;
  • To promote friendly relations between the sending State and the receiving State, and developing their economic, cultural and scientific relations.

The Embassy coordinates a network of 9 Consulates, 5 Cultural Institutes, 5 Italian Trade Agency offices, and 2 Italian Tourist Board offices. The staff of the embassy based in various offices is composed of personnel from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and from other Italian ministries and public entities. Through its Consular section, the Embassy of Italy in Washington also offers a host of consular services to Italian and non-Italian citizens living within its jurisdiction. The Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C. is the diplomatic mission of the Italian Republic to the United States, and the seat of the Italian Ambassador to the United States. The original Italian diplomatic mission to the United States following Italian unification was founded by Baron Saverio Fava.
