Romanian Permanent Representation to the European Union

The Romanian Permanent   Representation to the European Union represents the main channel of communication between the European Union institutions (EU Commission, EU Council, EU Parliament etc.) and the Romanian authorities (Government, Presidency, Parliament, as well as other public central and local authorities).

Objectives: ensuring an efficient activity of Romania as a EU Member State; promoting national positions and Romania’s image at a EU level.

Together with the Romanian public institutions, the Permanent Representation takes part in the drawing up of Romania’s position documents and in their promoting at the European institutions’ level. The expertise fields are varied and cover all the European Union policy areas: single market, agriculture, fisheries, justice and internal affairs, industry, competitiveness, tourism, transport, telecommunications, work market, health, education, research, environment, foreign relations, budget and finances etc.

Following the adoption of the position documents at the national level, the diplomatic staff of the Permanent Representation puts forward and promotes Romania’s position in the preparatory meetings of the Ministerial Councils.

The Permanent Representative and his/her Deputy take part in the reunions of the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER), that meets on a weekly basis and prepares the works of the EU Council. COREPER coordinates and supervises the activity of the different Council configurations, ensures consistency of the EU’s policies and works out agreements and compromises which are then submitted for adoption by the Council.

Besides the Council, the Permanent Representation works closely also with the other major actors involved in the decision process of the Union, such as the European Commission or the European Parliament.

The Permanent Representation also collaborates with other institutions/structures that take part in the decision process of the European Union, such as the European Committee of the Regions, the European and Social Committee, NGO-s, think tanks etc. It also interacts with structures that have a decision or decision influencing role at a national level, such as the Romanian Parliament, local and regional communities, civil society, union organisations.

Not in the least, ensuring an open and transparent relationship with both national and international mass-media represents one of the main objectives of the Romanian Permanent Representation.

Together with the other diplomatic missions of Romania to Brussels, the Permanent Representation contributes to the promoting of a correct image of Romania at EU level. The Representation organises cultural events, conferences, visits to Romania, work meetings between Romanian officials and EU institutions representatives, at the highest levels. It also provides information on the opportunities available for Romanian citizens to specialize and get hired in the EU structures.
