Ambassador Emanuela D’Alessandro

Emanuela D’Alessandro was born in Rome on November 9, 1960. She graduated with honors in 1984 with a degree in Political Science, specializing in International Relations, from LUISS University in Rome. She joined the diplomatic service in 1987, starting at the General Directorate of Personnel. In 1993, she was assigned to the Italian Embassy in Budapest as head of the Commercial Section. In 1997, she was seconded to the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) in Vienna, where she later served as Counselor at the Permanent Representation of Italy in 1999.

In November 2000, she returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina) and joined the Mission Structure responsible for organizing Italy’s G8 Presidency. In April 2002, she resumed work at the General Directorate of Personnel, initially leading the Competitions Office and later heading the office responsible for the legal and economic status of all Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff. In 2008, she became the first woman to be appointed Director of the Diplomatic Institute, the training school for Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2011, she was appointed Italian Ambassador to Zagreb, Croatia, and in 2015, she returned to Italy as Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Republic, becoming the first woman to hold this position. In 2017, she was promoted to the rank of Ambassador. On October 10, 2022, she officially assumed the position of Italian Ambassador to France.

Emanuela D’Alessandro is a dedicated advocate for women’s rights, particularly in the realm of employment. She was made President of the Committee for Equal Opportunities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her work to promote women’s rights, both in Italy and internationally, earned her the Minerva Award for International Relations and the “Mela d’Oro” (Golden Apple) from the Marisa Bellisario Foundation in 2016, recognizing her “commitment to public institutions, crowning a brilliant career conducted with rigor and discipline.” She is also a recipient of the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of Italy’s highest civilian honors.

Emanuela D’Alessandro is married to Giorgio Di Noia and has a daughter named Lucrezia.
