Ambassador Chris Trott

Chris Trott stands today as a shining example of what diplomatic service can achieve when combined with heart, expertise and a steadfast commitment to global good. Appointed in September 2021 as the British Ambassador to the Holy See, he brings to the role three decades of distinguished work in international affairs and a clear sense of mission.

His journey in diplomacy began in 1991, and from the very start Trott embraced the challenges of the work with both enthusiasm and humility. He served in Asia – in countries such as Burma and Japan – followed by postings in Afghanistan, the South Pacific, and across West and Southern Africa.  In 2007 he was appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Senegal (also accredited to Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and Mali) and later became Consul General in Cape Town in 2011.  His work in Africa culminated in him serving as Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan (2016-2019) and then as Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan (2019-2020).

What sets Ambassador Trott apart is not just the breadth of his assignments but the depth of his engagement. In his interview with The Catholic Herald, he reflected on how his experience in South Sudan—working in societies torn by conflict, rebuilding communities, supporting victims of violence, improving access to education and healthcare—gives him a lived awareness of the human stakes behind diplomacy. This willingness to engage where the stakes are high, to listen and learn in difficult settings, underscores his character.

At the heart of his current role lies the opportunity to connect two worlds: that of the United Kingdom’s foreign policy and that of the Holy See’s moral, religious and humanitarian influence across the globe. Trott has described his role as advocating for issues such as climate change, human trafficking, freedom of religion, conflict prevention, and human rights—areas where the Holy See has unique reach and often deep moral authority. He has remarked that: “We spend a lot of time as diplomats trying to think about… how we promote a sensible dialogue on sexual violence in conflict [and] on climate or on human trafficking… and actually, that’s all stuff that naturally comes to the Holy See.”

Trott’s appointment to Rome is not the end of a journey, but the beginning of perhaps his most resonant chapter—serving at the heart of a global spiritual and diplomatic crossroads. His dedication exemplifies how diplomacy can be more than negotiations and treaties; it can be about connecting people, ideas and values, and supporting the most vulnerable in our world. As he himself has said, he “hardly ever got up in the morning and didn’t want to go to work… I recognise that I’m in a hugely fortunate situation. The reason… is because I feel that the work that I am doing is important, and I love doing it for my country.” In a time when the world looks for leadership, substance and hope, Chris Trott offers all three. He is an inspiring figure who reminds us that service, perseverance and empathy are not just ideals — they are the backbone of effective diplomacy and meaningful change.

British Embassy the Holy See

The British Embassy to the Holy See stands as one of the United Kingdom’s most symbolically significant diplomatic missions — a bridge between the temporal and the spiritual, between statecraft and conscience. Its role extends far beyond the walls of diplomacy; it is a platform for dialogue, understanding, and cooperation between the British Government and the Vatican, the smallest independent state in the world yet one of the most influential voices in global affairs.

The Embassy represents the UK’s commitment to engage with the Holy See on the great moral and humanitarian questions of our age — from the pursuit of global peace and conflict resolution to the defence of human rights, the promotion of religious freedom, and the fight against human trafficking and modern slavery. It works closely with the Vatican on pressing international priorities such as climate change, sustainable development, and the protection of vulnerable communities.

Through the leadership of the British Ambassador and the dedication of its diplomatic team, the Embassy serves as both an advocate and a partner — fostering collaboration between two institutions united by shared values of compassion, justice, and the common good. It supports the UK’s global mission by contributing moral insight to policy and translating moral conviction into action.

In essence, the British Embassy to the Holy See is not merely a post of protocol; it is a place where diplomacy meets conscience, where faith and reason converge in service of humanity. It is a reminder that the power of dialogue and empathy remains one of the world’s greatest forces for peace and progress.
