Amasra Castle, Amasra, Bartın, Turkey

A mixed Roman/Byzantine/Genoese effort, Amasra’s citadel occupies the two districts straddling the promontory that commands access to the harbour: Boztepe and Zindan. Reached through three massive gateways from Küçük Liman, or on steps from Büyük Liman, and linked by a Roman bridge, the area is now mostly residential. The impressive original walls survive, however, as do relics such as the restored 9th-century Byzantine Church Mosque (Kilese Camii), and the Dereağzı Tunnel, which leads under the castle to a freshwater pool.
