Altstadt Old Town

The narrow streets of Altstadt, Düsseldorf’s old town, are home to chic cocktail bars, cool dance clubs and pubs pouring the city’s traditional Altbier. Local eateries serve meaty Rhineland specialties to sushi and Italian, and the broad promenade along the Rhine is lined with relaxed cafes. Museums include the Schifffahrtsmuseum, focused on shipping, and the K20, with modern work by the likes of Klee and Dalí.

It covers only half a square kilometre and is nevertheless known as the “the longest bar in the world”. In fact, the old town of Düsseldorf has many facets beyond the famous Altbier and the notorious “Raubeinigen Köbesse”, as the waiters are called here. In the area between Heinrich-Heine-Allee, Hofgarten, Rhine embankment promenade and Carlstadt, not only are there more than 260 possibilities to satisfy your hunger and thirst, in this historic city centre your soul will also be nourished. The St.-Lambertus-Basilika, the Schlossturm (palace tower) on Burgplatz, the historic Rathaus (city hall) and the Jan-Wellem Reiterdenkmal (equestrian monument) are just a few highlights on the long list of attractions. Exhibitions with international aspirations attract those interested in art to the K20 and the Kunsthalle (Art gallery) at Grabbeplatz, your craving for shopping will be satisfied just a few steps further on the Flingerstrasse and the Mittelstrasse. Whether you want to conclude an eventful day here in one of the quaint breweries, in a traditional fish restaurant or with a fine drink on the Kasematten (casemates) of the Rhine embankment promenade overlooking the picturesque Oberkassel, is up to you.
