Alan Meltzer Chargé d’Affaires

Alan Meltzer, a career officer of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor, assumed his role as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin in July 2024. From May-July 2023, he served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central and Eastern Europe, having served the previous two years as Director of the Office of Central European Affairs. He served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (2018-21) and as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (2015-18). His career has been divided between Eurasia and Latin America. He served as Counselor for Political-Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia and also worked in Mexico City; Moscow; Montevideo; and Guatemala City. Mr. Meltzer is a recipient of the Presidential Meritorious Service Award, a four-time recipient of senior performance pay, and a five-time recipient of the Department of State’s Superior Honor Award.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Meltzer was an Attorney-Adviser in the State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser and practiced corporate and international trade law in New York.

A native of New York, Mr. Meltzer received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Haverford College. In 2014, he was a Distinguished Graduate of the National Defense University’s College of International Security Affairs. He speaks Spanish, Russian, and German. He is married to Anna Meltzer — an international public health specialist — and has an adult daughter. In his free time, he and Anna enjoy biking, skiing, history, and wine, passions they look forward to indulging in Germany.
