Al Jazirah al Hamra Fort – Heritage Old Village, Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

Al Jazirah Al Hamra Fort lies in the town of the same name, in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra actually consists of the present modern village and the old abandoned fishing village. The fort is situated at the edge of the old village guarding the landward approach to the old village from the raids of rivalling tribes. I could not find any historical information about the fort. If you know anything; please mail me. I think it was built somewhere in the late 19th or early 20th century.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra Fort has a square groundplan with one square corner tower and a projecting round tower halfway its western wall.

The old village was abandoned by its inhabitants somewhere during the 1960’s for reasons unknown. All it’s coral brick buildings; houses and mosques, are now slowly crumbling away. You can freely roam it’s streets, courtyards and explore the rooms of the houses. According to locals the empty village is supposed to be haunted.
