To reach Agios Nikolaos, we can do it from Heraklion , only 65 km away, which, as we can see in the section of the Cretan capital, has regular flights to the Nikos Kazantzakis airport, and also during the summer it has a service of ferry that connects the port of Piraeus, on the mainland, with Heraklion.
Agios Nikolaos was built in the old village of Lato. This city was born in the 3rd century BC, and was completely autonomous, as it had its own currency, and continued to grow during the Roman and Byzantine periods. During the Venetian mandate, Mirabello Fortress was built on a hill, with the aim of protecting its small port. Unfortunately, no remains of this fortress are preserved, but he named this bay. During the Turkish domination, the city was not inhabited, but its port continued to be used. At the end of this period, a small settlement was born around the port, which was called Agios Nikolaos, in honour of the small and charming church that was in the peninsula of the port.
