Abadía of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, Unesco Site, Poitou-Charentes, France

The St.Savin Abbey is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It retains within it a number of priceless frescoes. The discovery of this cycle of biblical paintings, made around 1100, is extraordinary. We must appreciate the feat at that time meant that these works are painted on the surface of a dome 16 meters high. Between the pillars, a total of 31 paintings can be seen on the walls of this abbey. Its architectural framework, with details everywhere give it a special character. Everyone should appreciate the quality and effort of these paintings. Once you enter the church, you are drunk on the magic of the place.

It’s very big. Indeed, the body of the church is extraordinary: the dome, the nave and side vaults are impressive. The impression of lightness is accentuated by the fineness of round columns and the light that bathes the church generously. They call it the abbey of 1000 columns. Note the impressive silhouette of the stone spire crowning the Gothic facade of the bell tower.
