This outdoor work by Beijing-based artist Yue Minjun depicts 14 cheerful sculptures of himself. A-maze-ing Laughter is a captivating public art installation located in Morton Park, Vancouver, British Columbia. Created by Chinese artist Yue Minjun in 2009, the sculpture features 14 bronze figures, each approximately three meters tall, depicting the artist’s own image in a state of hysterical laughter. This installation has become one of Vancouver’s most beloved public artworks, inviting both locals and visitors to engage with its playful and thought-provoking design.
The sculpture was part of the Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale and was later donated to the city by Chip and Shannon Wilson through the Wilson5 Foundation in 2012. An inscription carved into the cement seating accompanying the sculpture reads, “May this sculpture inspire laughter, playfulness, and joy in all who experience it.” The installation has been nominated in the Great Places in Canada Contest 2013 and was the only work of public art to receive a nomination.
