4th Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment (4 R YORKS)

The 4th Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment (4 R YORKS)! This isn’t just any military unit; it’s the Army Reserve battalion of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment, the only “County Regiment” left in the British Army, meaning it has deep roots and strong ties right here in Yorkshire. These are the brave and committed individuals who balance civilian lives with the demanding, exhilarating, and hugely rewarding role of being a soldier!

4 R YORKS provides a highly credible and capable Light Infantry force to support the Regular Army. While all soldiers in 4 R YORKS are first and foremost Combat Infanteers – trained to engage in dismounted close combat and operate in challenging environments – the battalion also offers a variety of crucial roles. This includes everything from Combat Medics providing vital emergency care, to Section Commanders leading teams of eight soldiers, and Infantry Officers who command and inspire, making critical decisions under pressure. Their training is designed to develop highly skilled and adaptable soldiers ready for a wide array of missions.

The soldiers of 4 R YORKS are consistently engaged in challenging and demanding activities, both in the UK and overseas. They frequently participate in large-scale exercises, often alongside their Regular Army counterparts and key international allies. Recent highlights have included deployments to exercises in the USA, where they trained in complex urban and wooded terrain, conducting operations with support from drones and attack helicopters. They’ve also been involved in adventurous training in incredible locations like the Amazon Rainforest, kayaking for hundreds of kilometres – demonstrating the unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that the Army Reserve can offer!

Beyond their operational and training commitments, 4 R YORKS maintains a strong connection to the local community across Yorkshire and Teesside. They are based in various locations including Hull, York (with their headquarters at Worsley Barracks, Fulford Road), Barnsley, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Leeds, Middlesbrough, and Catterick. Their soldiers are actively involved in numerous community engagement activities, participating in events like Armed Forces Day parades and supporting local initiatives, further strengthening the bond between the Army and the public they serve. Joining 4 R YORKS means becoming part of a proud, close-knit military family with a rich heritage and a commitment to excellence.
