The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps project has been a neighborhood collaboration to create a sea to stars themed mosaic flowing up a 163 step stairway located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Heights Neighborhood. Neighborhood residents Jessie Audette and Alice Yee Xavier started the project in 2003 in a grassroots effort to connect the neighbors in a community project to beautify Golden Gate Heights. Nestled in the quiet, sunny streets of San Francisco’s Inner Sunset district, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps is one of those hidden treasures that feels like a secret the city reluctantly shares with those willing to climb a little. Completed in 2005, this dazzling mosaic staircase was the dream of Irish-born artist Aileen Barr and mosaic expert Colette Crutcher, supported by more than 300 neighbors who sponsored and helped craft individual tiles. Inspired by the famous Escadaria Selarón in Rio de Janeiro, the 163-step ascent transforms an ordinary hillside stairway into a flowing tapestry of sea, sky, and stars, and sun, with fish, birds, flowers, and swirling patterns that seem to move upward as you climb.
Each tile tells a tiny story; some bear the names or handprints of local children and residents, making the whole project a living love letter from the community to its own corner of the world. Reaching the top rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Park’s treetops, and the pastel rooftops of the Sunset stretching toward downtown’s distant skyline. On a clear day the breeze carries the faint salt of the sea, and you’ll often find locals walking their dogs, photographers waiting for the perfect golden-hour shot, or couples quietly sitting on the steps sharing coffee. The project has become a gentle symbol of San Francisco’s creative, collaborative spirit, proof that beauty can bloom from grassroots effort in a city famous for both its grand landmarks and its quirky neighborhood gems. Whether you’re a visitor hunting for something off-the-beaten-path magic or a resident rediscovering your own backyard, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps invites you to slow down, look closely, and feel the quiet joy of climbing something handmade, heartfelt, and utterly enchanting.
